Leadership Retreat at Sleeping Warrior Camp

The ALADI Leadership Retreat was a transformative four-day experience that brought together young African leaders to connect with their heritage, gain life-changing insights, and shape a shared vision for the future. Held from August 21st to 24th at the Sleeping Warrior Camp, the retreat combined African wisdom with modern mentorship to empower attendees with essential life skills. Through dynamic discussions and interactive sessions led by industry experts, participants explored Africa’s unique challenges and opportunities while building connections across generations.
Day 1: Arrival and Leadership Session

Excitement was in the air as attendees arrived at the Sleeping Warrior Camp, with introductions and an opening lunch setting an engaging atmosphere. The first session, focused on leadership and communication, encouraged participants to connect and explore their leadership potential. After a relaxing break and a moment for everyone to mingle, the group gathered for an evening viewing of Beasts of No Nation to highlight the realities of conflict in Africa, inspiring valuable reflections on the continent’s challenges.

Day 2: Health and Wellness

The day kicked off with a challenging morning hike through the scenic surroundings. Conversations flowed naturally as participants encouraged each other along the way, bonding over the shared experience. The sense of accomplishment upon reaching the peak set a positive tone for the rest of the day. In the afternoon, a health-focused session underscored the connection between self-care and effective leadership, encouraging attendees to prioritize their well-being. The day ended around a lively bonfire, where new friendships deepened through games and open discussions under the stars.

Day 3: Self-Discovery and Mentorship

The busiest day began with a yoga and stretching session to prepare everyone for a packed agenda. The first discussion, on understanding oneself as an African, offered an insightful look into cultural identity. This was followed by a session on civic awareness, teaching the importance of being informed and active citizens. A mid-day team-building activity kept spirits high, leading into a session on mentorship, where AKAD mentors shared inspiring perspectives on growth and personal development. A unique silk farming tour rounded out the afternoon, providing an up-close look at sustainable agriculture. The day closed with an evening session on negotiation skills, a crucial tool for effective communication.

Day 4: Personal Branding and Lake Excursion

With mixed emotions, participants began the last day with a session on personal branding, emphasizing the importance of self-presentation and authenticity. Afterwards, everyone enjoyed a trip to nearby Lake Elementaita, including a visit to the hot springs, providing an exciting end to the retreat. The retreat closed with brunch by the lake, where new friendships were celebrated, and farewells were exchanged. Each attendee left with a renewed sense of purpose, a commitment to Africa’s growth, and an eagerness to continue their personal development journey.

This retreat was the beginning of a transformative journey for all involved. It provided young Africans with essential life skills, inspired them to embrace their identity, and empowered them to contribute to a brighter future for the continent. Thank you to ALADI Institute, AKAD Education Group, and Sleeping Warrior Camp for making this experience possible.
